      An exceptionally vigorous winter flowering groundcover of Mexican origin whose soft pink daisy-like flowers and flowing mounds of lush, lacy foliage make for choice filler between warm season shrubs, particularly Roses, where it will appreciate the offered shelter during summer and mask any awkwardity in their off season, when it shines.

      Easily grown in any reasonably drained soil. Not drought tolerant but not a high water user either as it is at a low ebb during the heat, though I suspect in more humid regions it would romp year round but maybe not else it should be more commonly encountered. Cut back hard in spring or as needed and the shallow rooted stems are easily removed by hand. Somewhat frost tolerant but probably not great in the coldest areas.

      A fast growing, sensationally hardy garden sculpture, also useful as a source of low grade fibre for ropes and twine around the home. The single three metre wide symmetrical rosette of stiffly held, sword-like, green, leathery leaves produces, in maturity (typically 3-5 years), a towering seven metre tall many branched flower spike that bears hundreds of pendant, greenish-cream, goblet-like flowers followed by plump bulbils that are easily detached and replanted for large scale greenscaping. As it is monocarpic (it dies after flowering) it can be useful for temporary fill or scale while more permanent plants are still growing or else replace it with one of its progeny for greater dynamics.

      All the glory of a large Agave without the time commitment, sans spines and suckering.

      From South America and the Caribbean and looking equally at home in xeric, mediterranean or tropical styled gardens. Unkillable in any soil that receives at least a few drinks a year. Tolerant of light frosts. Survives shade and/or copious water but will be prone to toppling when in flower.

      A pitiful pot subject unless it can get its roots in the ground.

      An attractive, evergreen, medium sized shrub. A quick grower with dark green silver backed leaves paired along stiff woody stems. Dense sprays of tubular, mid pink flowers are produced on mass on and off throughout the warmer months.

      An ultra fast growing, tree-like, leguminous shrub with large, softly hairy, elliptical leaves bearing dense spikes of sweetly perfumed, bright yellow, 3cm, pea-like flowers in early winter, which are followed by large inflated seed pods that explode loudly during warm spring days.

      Reaches full size of 3-4m within 2 years, with an expected lifespan of 3-4 years.

      Self seeds freely, which is handy as you look forward to it's spectacular display each year.

      Must be planted as a seedling. Seedling stage lasts only a few weeks so is rarely offered.

      A stunning perennial groundcover now extinct in its native home the Canary Islands. The soft, trailing mat of whorled, grey-green linear leaves smothers in fiery clusters of red and orange beak-like flowers throughout spring.

      A quick growing, nitrogen fixing legume, traditionally regarded as a potted annual. In our ideal climate it also a hardy groundcover for well drained, sunny sites and is at its best in alkaline sand. Simulate its natural habitat by draping it down a limestone retaining wall or cliff, or just mass it for unbridled colour.

      Somewhat deciduous over summer, when over watering usually proves fatal. Frost tender. Easily propagated by cuttings.

      A sensational and drought tolerant shrubby perennial from southern California. Pairs of slightly sticky dark green leaves clothe the soft scrambling stems and are joined in spring and summer by a endless profusion of widely flared, pale apricot, trumpet shaped flowers.

      During the heat and dry conditions of summer the leaves slowly roll up to conserve moisture, to the gardener uninitiated in the ways of drought tolerant plants this would seem to demand a good watering but such action will sooner or later lead to the untimely demise of this beautiful plant.

      Quick growing and happy in any soil with at least reasonable drainage.

      At their happiest with light summer shade where the flowering period is greatly extended.

      Perfect for planting beneath unirrigated roses for a world of unique colour combinations.
